Foundations of Educational Technology
ETEC 511
Coasting along the water enabled me to focus on the sights, sounds, and smells around me, as well as become mindful of my own rhythms and movements. ETEC 511 allowed for this reflection. This course used a case study approach to examine technology in the design of instruction and curriculum in aspects of cultural, historical, ecological, natural, ethical, existential, spiritual, sociopolitical and technical-empirical dimensions. The framework of discourse for ETEC 511 was based upon an article by Stephen Petrina (n.k.), called e-Learning and Educational Technology with SOUL (Slow Online & Ubiquitous Learning). The premise of the article suggested that although the availability of online 24/7 learning is considered to be convenient, it is a 'pitfall' as negative physical and psychological effects occur to online learners, and it is important to be cognizant of the health and well-being of elearners and iteachers. Discussions were encouraged to be thoughtful, yet infrequent to focus on quality versus quantity. As the semester progressed, I was thankful for the fostering of online self-regulation, as it brought me back outdoors to the sights, sounds and smells of the ocean shore, where I could reflect on my learning away from digital devices.

The topics presented and discussions that ensued were informative and engaging. Topics of particular interest to me included discussions around articles written by Catherine Adams. They made me reflect on how technology is effecting our behaviour, in particular, children's behaviour. As faster and stronger technology devices are being developed and our use of technology is more prevalent, this is causing our connections with technology to change as well as causing a change in our connections with other human beings. I have always been interested in the psychology behind behaviour, and in this course, I became particularly interested in the influences of technology on children's behaviour. Two artifacts, at the bottom of this page, describe various psychological phenomena that have resulted from the use of technology.
TED Talk: An Ultra-Low-Cost College Degree by Shai Reshef
Two videos, presented themselves within various points of ETEC 511: An Ultra-Low-Cost College Degree by Shai Reshef and School in the Cloud by Sugata Mitra which brought up ethical, political, ecological and sociology discussions.

Of particular interest to me was learning how children gain access to free education with the use of technological devices and access to the internet. Of equal interest to me was how to create such a learning environment. This interest would continue in later courses, as I wondered how conditions needed to change for children to gain access to the internet in remote and secluded areas. I would also later learn how to create courses which would enable learners to gain access to needed knowledge.
One question that that continues to be with me today:

Case Study: Cyberpsychology
The artifact below, Cyberpsychology: Psychology of Technology, was a case study, inquiry-based group project. Our inquiry led us to explore the various psychological phenomena created by technology, and present them in a Weebly site. My particular piece focussed on addiction to technology. The page gives information on statistics, various symptoms and physiological effects of addiction to technology, and Tellagami was used to create a avatars to present three case studies.

I continue to be worried about the effects of the overuse of technology, particularly with myself, my children, and my students, and I wonder what the future holds for later generations.
Scholarly Essay
I became intrigued by the subject of the final essay from the behaviour of my students and of my own children, and I wondered why the selfie phenomenon has created such a strong hold in the culture of current teenagers. Social media plays an integral part in daily lives of individuals around the world, and selfies help portray images and stories through social media.

The paper below examines how teens and young adults use selfies as a means to explore various identities and to portray themselves. The paper also discusses the positive and negative effects (both physical and psychological) selfies may have on children.
