It was fitting to take ETEC 510 towards the end of my journey.  Theory was put into practice by creating learning environments that both challenged and showcased my passions in education.

There were two key ideas that resonated with me in this course.  The first being from Tim Brown, who contends that end products should not be designed for consumption, but rather for further questioning and creativity.  He believes that design of learning environments should be taken out of the hands of the designers and placed in the hands of everyone, meaning that the learner needs to be in control and navigate his/her own learning.  The projects that I feel the most satisfied and proud of are projects that involve interaction and involvement from the viewer/learner.  The projects I designed were ultimately meant to encourage learners to question and crate, rather than solely for reading consumption.

The second key idea, evolved from an article written by Henry Jenkins (2009) titled, 'Confronting the Challenges of Participatory Culture Media Education for the 21st Century'.  Jenkins suggests that a participation gap exists with students from lower income homes who lack the technology to participate in social networking with their peers.  Jenkins believes that due to the lack of participation, children in lower socioeconomic areas will not experience and develop technological skills that will help them fully participate in the world of the 21Century.

The following artifacts of ETEC 510 include the exploration of various learning environments which incorporate elements of the BC curriculum.

 Stop Motion Animation

This turned out to be a three week project with my students.  It was my first time using stop-motion animation and I wanted to make my learning as relevant as possible. To create this project, groups of students created mini skits to demonstrate self-regulation techniques when using the internet.  The mini skits were designed, created and edited using imovie, all done by the students.

The Design Wiki is a 'collaborative knowledge base that has been entirely authored by ETEC 510 students'.  The knowledge created on the wiki is a collection of theories, ideas and examples of technology enhanced learning environments.

The subheading I chose was Digital Citizenship as this is an area of teaching that is continuously evolving and there is is need for constant revisiting with students.

I seem to have run into one challenge after another with this project: technology -- we didn't have enough of it, and I needed to personally download the necessary apps on all the ipads; using the technology -- some of my students hadn't used ipads until this project, so it was difficult for them to keep the pace of the other students; editing -- this was a long process and we had to reshoot some video; posting of the document on the Wiki -- I had never written on a Wiki, and I didnt realize I couldn't just cut and paste, but instead, I needed a crash course on coding in Wiki.

Collaborative Project on Coding

As a cumulative project, my group chose to create a Weebly site to support educators and students in their understanding,

exploration and success in coding.

We based our pedagogy on play-based learning, and used learning standards from the BC curriculum to formulate the content.
